The first part of audience research was to find out why people listen to music, what kind of music they enjoy most, where do they get their music from, what makes them listen to it, who are their favourite artists at the current moment, how often do their preferences in music change etc... this research was done both online and in person, questionairres were made on word, and were both sent to people on MSN, and printed out and given to around 50 people in the school to fill in, results were generally as follows:
- EVERYONE listens to music
- most people listen to music to chill out
- people have different tastes of music depending on what they're doing, what mood their in etc..
- generally, alot of people like R'n'B
- not many people listen to punk, heavy metal and goth music
- ALOT of people illegaly download their music
- ALOT of people listen to music off their ipod
- people's preferences change depending on what they think is a "good song"..but this is always in the same genre of music they normally listen to
- most popular artists right now are lady gaga, lowkey, lil wayne, drake, trey songs, eminem, tinie tempah, enique iglesias, rhianna, taylor swift.
- alot of people are into mainstream music, not so much underground genre's
- the amount of people listening to underground music is starting to increase rapidly
- most people use software like limewire and frostwire and torrents to download music
a group of 16-18 year olds were given the first drawn up draft of the CD cover for our artist, and the feedback was as follows:
- the front cover shouldn't be too crowded, it should be simple with the artist's name BANG out in front
- the background shouldn't be so plain
- there should be a silhouette of the artist on the front cover with graffiti all over it and some bling
- the name of his main song should be on the front cover
- the idea of putting a crown on top of the "i" in kingsta is a good idea!
they were also given the opportunity to listen to one of the artists tracks, called "woos dat" , there were mixed reactions to this song, which were;
- the lyrics are hard to understand, they should be in the inside cover of the cd, on in a booklet inside!
- -all the boys loved the music, but not too many girls were keen on it, which means that the front cover should target young males aspiring to be like KiNGSTA (cool, streetwise, typical "ilford boy")
- "the song sounds good!"
- "the beat is nice"
- "its different to any grime i've heard"
how can i apply this audience research to my production?
- i can make changes to the CD cover based on audience feedback
- i know which parts of the music to promote on the CD cover
- and what ideas i have at the moment that people seem keen on
